Editorial: Power in our hands-A A +A
Sunday, May 11, 2014
WE’VE seen how life can be disrupted by just a switch. Now what?
We can’t expect much from the National Government. President Benigno C. Aquino III said as much when he blamed us for not paying high rates for our power supply, as if there is power supply to speak of or power facilities that the national government has invested on in Mindanao in the years since President Ferdinand E. Marcos was booted out.
President Aquino said as much when he blamed Mindanao leaders for not ensuring that there’s power for all, clearly not realizing that the agencies tasked with providing power are named National Power Corporation, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, and Power Sector Assets & Liabilities Management (Psalm) Corporation that are all national government owned and controlled corporations.
Forget it. This administration doesn’t get it. We are to blame, ergo, let’s simply all go off-grid.
When power was off for several hours a day, we were all complaining about the heat, and yet we just let the source of heat go unharnessed.
We are often told, it’s expensive. Guess what? Try driving up Marilog District in Davao City to realize… poor people are using solar energy and they are using this to light up their homes and run their televisions to watch their nightly telenovelas. Doesn’t that tell you anything?
It’s expensive if we go invest on a whole roof full of solar panels. But we can start bit by bit. Install enough to run your lights. Install another one to run your television. Year by year we add.
Why should we do that and allow the national government to sleep on its job to provide basic facilities for all? Simply because we know, the national government will just charge us higher anyway for the same lousy services we are getting, and by going off-grid, we deny them of our precious pesos.
There is power in our hands, and it was given to us by the Creator. Let’s harness that to our best advantage, away from the greedy hands of all those who only see opportunities to exploit the people.
