Editorial: A season to reflect

-A A +A

IT’S officially the Holy Week holidays, many will have a very long weekend, others will have two days off. Many are already out somewhere, while just as many are staying home doing catch-up on chores and errands.

Given the quiet days ahead, let us take time to reflect on how our less fortunate Filipinos are…like the ones who remain in evacuation centers in Zamboanga City.

While we receive a lot of news on how the earthquake-affected areas in Bohol and Cebu are recovering and how there are many international and local relief assistance groups operating in the areas affected by typhoon Yolanda, nothing much is heard from Zamboanga City. Yet, it’s a fact that the victims, whose suffering can even be worse than those who suffered from the typhoon and earthquake because they had to suffer through more than a week of gunbattles and fires that wiped out their communities, are still there, in evacuation centers.

Not even the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) carries any updates.

We can only hope that in this few days of quiet and reflections, the government will come to realize that the victims of the war waged by government in Zamboanga City are Filipinos like all of us, and may they also realize that unlike those who suffered the wrath of Yolanda and the earthquake in the Visayas, these residents were just caught in the ill-managed conflict resolution by government itself. If there is anyone more deserving of quick and all-encompassing indemnification, it is the people who lost their home and loved ones in Zamboanga.

They definitely do not deserve to be forgotten.
