CONGRATULATIONS, everybody. Another Araw ng Dabaw was celebrated in peace despite the revelry and crowd. The mobs in malls where competing television networks were setting up their shows may have sent many a typical Dabawenyo into nervous jitters, guess what? We survived the foundation week in one piece, with not one of the feared terror attacks.

Indeed, it will take some years more before Dabawenyos who have been through the worst will be comfortable with crowds and big gatherings. We can't blame ourselves. As we said, we've been through the worst.

We can read a similar message in how Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte makes himself scarce during celebrations like this. This is not the first time he went on leave for such a celebration. But those who know the mayor well, also know that he's just around, keeping track of everything and keeping a keen eye out for anything that can go amiss. If he doesn't go on leave, then he has to sti on the Rizal Park stage or grace events to greet each and every visitor who comes to town. Activities like these will take him away from his greatest concern, the peace and security of the city. And so, he spends yet another season on leave, while moving around. We can't blame him. He, too, has been through the worst with us.

But rejoice. We have been doing well despite our fears. We have not let our fears dictate our world and how we live our lives.

This is what we have learned throughout both turbulent and boom years of Davao: to go on with our lives no matter what circumstances will be thrown at us. For as long as we move as one city, as one community, then we're all right.

Having just celebrated the city's 77th charter anniversary, we move on to the 78th and beyond; hopefully with the same unique sense of community that we have been nurturing and enjoying throughout all these years.

Again, congratulations, everybody.
