WITH tight security in place for the celebration of the 77th Araw ng Dabaw Festival, thousands of Dabawenyos and tourists, both domestic and foreign, will only have to feast on the best, bounty and beauty that the country's most livable city can offer.

It is a very welcome move for local authorities to intensify intelligence monitoring and implement a Martial Law-type of security amid the recent armed conflict between members of the National People's Army and government troops in nearby Davao del Sur, killing 11 people and wounding several others.

Visitors need not fret to walk the streets and witness the Sayawan sa Da'n tomorrow and Parada Dabawenyo on Sunday. Spectators need not worry about going home late tonight after the Mutya ng Dabaw is crowned at the Davao City Recreation Center, formerly Almendras Gym. We have the best emergency response system 911 anyway and one of the country's best police force.

Shoppers will have a grand time as the Big Davao Fun Sale also opens in all major malls of Davao City today. Manila-based artists of the country's major TV networks will give mall-goers top-notch entertainment and excitement.

There is so much to see this weekend. So many great finds and premium discounts to enjoy at the malls. Eat durian, pomelo, mangosteen and other fruits that are readily available and cheap along the city's sidewalks and public markets. Sports enthusiasts, too, will have too many places to go since over 20 events are entered in this year's sportsfest.

And after all these festivities, Dabawenyos will have an extra day to be with families and loved-ones as Malacañang just declared March 17, 2014 a special non-working holiday in Davao City.

The festive ambience and the upbeat mood of Dabawenyos will show all and sundry that yes, it's Araw ng Dabaw! Let's celebrate. Let's go out and be part of the fun. But of course, let's be vigilant.
