A look back

-A A +A

THIS past week, my Facebook wall was (and actually still is) laden with mini-movies from my friends of their social networking history with the said site. Facebook is celebrating its tenth year and so they commemorated the milestone by creating these mini-documentaries of each member’s journey with them. I was wary of it at first, then skeptical about clicking the button because there was a virus masquerading as the look-back-movie that has been riding on the FB anniversary feature’s growing popularity. Hmp.

Anyway, I finally got to try out the feature. I figured there would eventually be a ‘cure’ for the pesky virus if indeed my computer would be unlucky to ‘catch’ it so I went ahead and clicked to see a friend’s movie. As I waited to see what her movie was about, I was quite surprised to see my own movie flash before me! To be truly honest, i became emotional about the images that I saw, snippets of my past that brought back memories that have somehow been drowned out by the challenges of the present times. I was pleasantly surprised..and watched it over and over until I cried. Hehe.

We all need to be reminded sometimes that there are good times. There may have become too remotely in our past but there were good times. Yes, we are aware that these actual events exist in our lives but sometimes we get overwhelmed by problems and become quite negatively myopic about these experiences. There may be instances that require such kind of nearsightedness but there are experiences that need pleasant memories from our past too, so that we can manage to forge into the future with less heartache and more hope.

Reminiscing also helps us remember that there have been challenges in the past that we survived despite the hardships and the despair. I could not help but smile and say a prayer of thanks as the images of me in the hospital flashed across the screen. I have had more than a fair share of medical emergencies that I would care to remember! Seeing myself in a hospital gown just flooded me with so many memories. It reminded me of surgeries, chemotherapies and times at the ICU. Those were particularly difficult times that affected not only me but all the significant people in my life. Quite surprisingly, I looked at it and realized that I am one of the lucky ones. Although I have gone through a lot, I am, in fact, still here! I have weathered perfect storms and that in itself is a feat, right?

We all need to be the head cheerleaders of our own lives. It can be difficult to be so when you have all these challenges that make you feel that the whole world (and the universe) is picking on you. We cannot always be brave and strong and invincible. We all have our weak moments. Times when we just want to give up or worse, feel defeated. The thing is, it really does happen to the best of us. It happens to everyone. Surviving challenges can really be a matter of perspective. You choose what you need to do (hopefully it would be to see the good points of an otherwise bad experience), pray, hope and then just get it done!

Looking back can provide us with the impetus to pull ourselves out from a slump. We can become consumed my negativity that we fail to see the achievements we have gathered through the years. We all fall from the bad blows and we are allowed to stay stricken until we gather enough strength to get up and get going again. Some people disengage from their usual activities, there are those who need to drink it off or cry it out. Still there are those who put up a brave face and pretend that it was nothing, while they suffer in silence. We all have our ways of dealing with things but at some point, I guess we have to realize that we need to snap out of it and continue on.

Watching the “Look Back”: made me realize that there were good things, and that even the bad ones had good results, too. It reminded me that I had awesome achievements that deserve to be recalled once in a while not only because it made me feel awesome but also because we need cheer-uppers so that we can continue living our lives knowing that some great is still up ahead, waiting for us. We all need to be reminded that our lives are full of experiences that should make us proud of ourselves. We have our moments in the sun. During moments when all that is there are misgivings, it will help to go back and see that there are great times that can push us and encourage us to look towards the future with hope and a smile on our faces.

Happy Sunday!
