After a five-day battle of strength and stamina in a world class sports facilities in Davao del Norte, heavy favorite Davao City retained its crown as over-all champion of the 2013 Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet in a lopsided fashion with points higher than the combined points of the three divisions following the big city. Davao City, also known as Davao City Durians, ruled both the elementary and the secondary level totaling to 863.

A small city with a giant performance is Panabo City Banana Magnates which garnered 282 points to grab the second spot while Davao del Sur Cobras came in very closely with 280 points at third.

Completing the standings and their respective points are Davao del Norte (242), Compostela Valley (238), Tagum City (222), Digos City (182.5), Davao Oriental (152), Mati City (124) and Island Garden City of Samal (75).

Although the host Davao Pioneers only managed to land in fourth place, the host governor, Rodolfo P. del Rosario and Congressman Anthony del Rosario and of course, Provincial Sports Coordinator Giovanni Gulanes are more than happy that they were able to fulfil a promise during the bidding for this year’s host of Davraa that they would do everything to make the hosting worthwhile.

Superintendent Josephine Fadul and her indefatigable Sports Supervisor Tito Benegian had worked hand in hand with the provincial government in terms of support and manpower to ensure that there would be no stone unturned in the hosting. Tagum City under the leadership of Mayor Rey T. Uy for LGU and Superintendent Cristy C. Epe and Supervisor Isaias Maghuyop for DepED had also given the needed assistance to support the province the fact that the capitol is located in the capital city.

We cannot also discount the support extended by the regional team headed by Director Gloria D. Benigno, Assistant Director Nenita E. Lumaad, PESS-SESO Chief Felipe Non and his subordinates in his division and the other technical officials from schools, division offices and the regional office who served during the annual regional meet. An elaborate and colorful spectacle marked the close of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet that continued to be dominated by the Davao City Durians.

In a report written by Noel Baguio of Davao del Norte Information Office headed by Romulo Tagalo who is also the Assistant Provincial Administrator, quoted Governor del Rosario saying that the public witnessed humility in victory and pride in defeat – the true virtues of sportsmanship.

In the same report, it said that Del Rosario reiterated his mantra, which has become the second motto of the competitions: “Storms may have shattered our lives, but never our will to rise.”

The governor thanked everyone for making the event a big success and revealed the world-class sports complex would remain open to the public after the Davraa.

He also offered the facility as training venue for the winning athletes in their preparation for the Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City this summer and said that Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center would remain open to help Davao Region attain more medals.

GMA Kapuso TV network staged a hip party which added color to the awarding to the delight of the delegates and the general public.
