Editorial: River reminders

Monday, March 30, 2015 - 08:33 p.m.

LET'S call to mind the issues in 2012. One of them: water pollution in the city's major rivers.

Hidalgo: A breath of refreshing and inspiring air

Monday, March 30, 2015 - 08:33 p.m.

AFTER the harrowing events of the political turmoils and the Fallen44, we needed a respite from the bickerings, yes endless quarrels and wrangles from the politicians, the citizens, and netizens. The welcome relief happened when I was invited by my family to watch the Summer Culminating Ballet Recital of the students of my daughter-in-law, Cecile Dioquino Hidalgo in her Isayaw Dance Center located at McPod Bldg. in Matina near the Ateneo Grade School. The recital was held at the Activity Center of NCCC Mall on March 30, starting at 5 p.m.

Editorial: Divine intercessions for peace

Monday, March 30, 2015 - 12:44 a.m.

LAST Saturday at noon, tribal folks in different villages in South Central Mindanao conducted rituals for peace or “pengapor” (ritual in the Erumanun Manuvu dialect). The tribal people -- Teduray, Lambangian, Uvo Manuvu, and Erumenun Manuvu in Maguindanao, North Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat are as much a part of the so-called Bangsamoro as the Moro people are.

Valle: Pre-setting our wants

Monday, March 30, 2015 - 12:39 a.m.

Motivation is part and parcel of our individual growth it would seem, because without it, as it is said, the need to carry on life from birth to adulthood would be a struggle. Thus, even when we were still in the womb, our human nature need to coax us to grow and be whole to survive each and every step along the way.

Davao del Norte’s Palarong Pambansa hosting to establish benchmark

Escobarte, CESO IV, Regional Director, DepED Region 11 to all stakeholders and recipients of the efforts to improve the basic education). Estremera: Wisdom

Saturday, March 28, 2015 - 09:31 p.m.

OH, SO this is wisdom.

In the days of long ago, I remember elder folks just smiling at us but not saying much, especially when we run bawling our eyes out, or just sobbing incoherently to bring our issue forward.

Gil: Welcome, my brother!

Saturday, March 28, 2015 - 09:30 p.m.

AS IF the family were not over-populated enough, my large clan has a propensity to adopt other individuals into the fold. I am quite uncertain of the unspoken criteria used in choosing these individuals for they all appear to have no common denominator.

One of these individuals who have (fortunately or unfortunately) been adopted into my large family is Ramon, a childhood friend and classmate of my brother, Miguel. And like Miguel, Ramon is a medical doctor.

Custodio: To ask and actually receive

Saturday, March 28, 2015 - 09:29 p.m.

ASKING can mean many things. We ask when he have questions we want to be answered. We ask if we want information. We ask as a means of requesting for something that we need. It can really be any of these three, depending on what we have in mind. We can be very inquisitive. Curious. Needy.

Editorial: Keeping an eye out for everyone

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 10:36 p.m.

IT’S heartening to know that cloud seeding operations have started. It has been days since the last rain. There was, the other night, but it was just enough to cool the air, and barely satisfied the thirst of the earth. How worse is it in the farmlands?

With heat like this, we can expect a bumper harvest of fruits, but agriculture is more than just fruits, and farmers are in dire need of rain.

Ledesma: Institutionalizing corruption

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 10:35 p.m.

The BS Aquino administration is about to bow out but already the nation can hardly wait for the proper time for it to exit. If only the successor could provide a modicum of integrity, the call for Aquino to step down would have reached a crescendo that could lead to the premature exit of the President even when he is drawing near to his retirement.

Velez: A real valedictory

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 10:34 p.m.

OF the multitudes of graduation speeches from tens and thousands of schools this month, Krisel Mallari's speech stands out.

Not because Krisel coaxes words of dreams and inspirations, but rather her Salutatorian address delivered the sweet, ugly truth for her now alma mater Sto. Nino Parochial School about honesty and integrity.

Binay a Lee Kuan Yew?

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 10:33 p.m.

You’ve got mail

Dear Sun Star, Thanks for Jun Ledesma's article about Singapore and leadership. He points out that even with an economic growth rate of 7.2%, the Philippines still has more than thirty percent of the population living in poverty. He mentions both corruption and lack of discipline as reasons but I think he has left out one important reason that Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore have succeeded in providing Singapore citizens with prosperity while poverty still grows in the Philippines.

Editorial: Countdown begins

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 12:15 a.m.

WITH a security plan in place, the countdown begins for Davao del Norte's hosting of the 2015 Palarong Pambansa from May 3 to 9.

Uyboco: The man who moved a mountain

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 12:13 a.m.

I JUST finished reading the incredible story of Dashrath Manjhi, also known as the “Mountain Man,” who devoted 22 years of his life to a singular task -- carving a 100-meter path through the Gehlour Hills in Bihar, India, using nothing but hand tools. It was not an act of madness nor a desperate attempt at seeking fame or of breaking some world record. Rather, it was an act born of tragedy, fueled by love and a genuine desire to help his community.

Millan: Wild card

Friday, March 27, 2015 - 12:12 a.m.

IN the last survey that was conducted covering potential or probable presidential candidates for the 2016 elections, almost 10 names were included in the list for the respondents to choose their preferences from.

Editorial: High hopes on Asia... if only...

Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - 09:14 p.m.

THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) once again sees high growth prospects for Asia in 2015 and 2016 "supported by soft commodity prices and recovery in the major industrial economies."

Ledesma: Binay a Lee Kuan Yew?

Wednesday, March 25, 2015 - 09:14 p.m.

BEFORE anything else, I personally want to share the grief of the Singaporeans over the demise of their revered leader - Lee Kuan Yew - the father of a great nation known worldwide for its enviable success in the field of commerce, industry and in instilling the virtue of honesty and efficiency in the government bureaucracy.

Tan: Operation red plate

Editorial: The numbers in drunk driving

Tuesday, March 24, 2015 - 11:15 p.m.

THE law against drunk and drugged driving will be implemented by first week of May, the Land Transportation Office 11 announced. They even showed their breath analyzer, which can measure a person’s blood alcohol content (BAC) and determine if he has gone beyond the limits.

Gonzales: Marching on..moving on…

Tuesday, March 24, 2015 - 11:13 p.m.

This month is merry with graduations and recognition ceremonies. Most families celebrate the achievements of their children in grade school, high school or college. It is a celebration of victory over years of hard work and coping with the rigors of studying and learning skills needed to get a good career in the future. “Congratulations”, defined as “the act of expressing joy or acknowledgment, as for the achievement or good fortune of another”, is a popular word at this time of the year and FB is flooded with pictures of regular students with medals, diplomas and trophies.

Monday, March 23, 2015 - 09:20 p.m.

YESTERDAY'S headline in a national daily quoted President Benigno C. Aquino III once again saying someone else failed him.

Hidalgo: Yes to peace; No to terrorism

Monday, March 23, 2015 - 09:20 p.m.

AFTER the unfortunate event concerning the Fallen 44 in Mamasapano, the merits of the BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law) became the crux of the matter in our search for lasting peace in Mindanao. Pros and cons commentaries were heard and read in TV, internet, both houses in the senate and congress, in forums and campuses. Even common people in the streets, barbershops, markets, malls get to talk about the issue.

Oledan: Beyond circus

Monday, March 23, 2015 - 09:16 p.m.

Two words that could have made a difference.

Editorial: Water and sustainable development

Sunday, March 22, 2015 - 10:58 p.m.

THE World Water Day came and went, barely noticed in this part of the earth, and that is unsettling.

Valle: Changing Mindset

Sunday, March 22, 2015 - 10:57 p.m.

IT IS always easy to talk about our perceptions and our beliefs when we freely speak about them. When we openly express our aspirations, we are also exposed to different reactions, but that is understandable. People who do not share what we think would tend to react differently, even be critical of the position that we have adopted.

Editorial: Worrying

Friday, March 20, 2015 - 09:06 p.m.

THAT there are seven more maternal deaths in 2014 than in 2013 is indeed worrying. We may say, but they are only a total of 126 who died while giving birth all over Davao Region where there are 1.5-million females above 15 years old.
