DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte declined Tuesday night the ice bucket challenge of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, saying he has pneumonia.
"I just came from the ICU (intensive care unit). I have pneumonia. It might recur. Maawa naman sya (She should consider my condition). I just got out of the hospital," Duterte told the media at Francisco Bangoy International Airport.
"I do not know the mechanics. Everybody seems to be getting wet with ice cold water. Titingnan ko muna yan and how much I can donate," he added.
De Lima on Tuesday dared Duterte to take up the challenge.
"Susmaryosep! Ayaw ko nga ng isang baso. Ligoan mo ako ng isang baso, magpatayan na tayo," Duterte jested.
The "Ice Bucket Challenge" has become an international craze.
Even former US President George W. Bush, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft founder Bill Gates also accepted the challenge.
Recently, Vice Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte did the ice bucket challenge and nominated his sister former mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to do the same.
Aside from taking the challenge, the vice mayor said he will also donate to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research and Gawad Kalinga.
His sister, meanwhile, refused to take the challenge but said she will donate money to a Davao charity.
The Ice Bucket Challenge is aimed at raising awareness and research funds for ALS.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
As a rule, a person asked to do it must post his own video within 24 hours after accepting the challenge of dousing himself with a bucket full of ice and water.
If one decides not to take the challenge, then he/she must donate to the ALS.org. If he/she takes up the challenge, he/she must still donate but in any amount desired. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
