IN celebration of August as the National Breastfeeding Awareness month, the Facebook group Breastfeeding Pinays (BFP), in collaboration with Stockbridge International School, will conduct its 2nd Hakab Na breastfeeding activity at 9 a.m. on August 2.

The simultaneous event will also be held in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo.

"Hakab" is a Tagalog word which means "clinging tightly to the body" or "tight-fitting."

The event's name defines the purpose for which it is to be held --breastfeeding awareness not only among the mothers but also among different individuals who could be part of their support groups.

BFP has invited all breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women in Davao to join the half-day breastfeeding activity to be held at Stockbridge International School (formerly Tumble Tots) which seeks to promote the importance of providing proper support to all breastfeeding Filipino families.

"Breastfeeding is a public health issue. There are those who are unaware of the challenges that breastfeeding mothers face and it is something that we are hoping to address. Fathers are also welcome to attend the event because they are part of the support group of the breastfeeding mothers," Ella Misa of BFP said.

The Hakab Na 2014 will be held in coordination with the Big Latch On, an international activity where mothers worldwide will simultaneously latch on their babies.

Last year, a total of 225 mothers in the Philippines participated in the event, along with 14,311 mothers in 27 more countries.

"We are hoping to be able to break the record this year," Misa said.

The event will further include games, a Meet and Greet with other moms, and a Question & Answer portion to be conducted by LATCH Moms.

A registration fee of P150 will be collected for every mother and baby/child pair, inclusive of a Mom shirt and give aways from Cycles Baby Detergent. (Jeffer Joy Orteza, AdDU Intern)
