Davao is 3rd highest in youth suicides: study-A A +A
Saturday, July 12, 2014
A STUDY revealed that Davao Region's youth who think of committing suicide registered as the third highest in the country, next to Caraga and Central Visayas.
This result of the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality (Yafs) study by the University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) and the Demographic Research and Development Foundation (DRDF) was based on the survey conducted between 2002 and 2013.
Suicide was listed under the non-sexual risk behaviors in the study; it also showed that for the same period, the youth in the region who attempted to commit suicide increased which "contradicts the declining national trajectory".
Moises Villacorta, information officer of the Commission on Population (PopCom) Davao Region, quoted the 2002 findings of the Yafs that youth with high suicidal tendencies are those in unstable unions, broken families, out of school youth, low educational attainment and those youth not currently working but had experienced working in the past.
Yafs is a series of nationally representative cross-sectional surveys on the Filipino youth aged 15-24 conducted in 1982, 1994, 2002 and 2013, which mainly focuses on the various sexual and non-sexual risk behaviors, teen pregnancy and HIV-Aids among the youth.
The Yafs result for Davao Region was launched last Friday at the Grand Men Seng Hotel in line with the celebration of the World Population Day. National Yafs results will be launched on July 16 at the El Bajada Hotel.
