DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered the police and the military not to allow the entry of long firearms in the city. The order came after Duterte raised the alert level due to a terror threat.

Duterte said no one is exempted from the ban. He said only those assigned in the city are allowed to bring long firearms within the city. Those who come from the neighboring provinces will have to deposit their long firearms at the boundary checkpoint before they be allowed entry.

It was back in 2008 when Duterte last ordered a ban on the entry of long firearms in the city after observing that several security escorts of politicians who visit Davao City were wantonly brandishing their high-powered firearms that had caused concern among residents here.

The latest ban however due to the terror threat. Duterte said the President told him to take the terror threat seriously. The threat reportedly came following the end of the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines (JSOTF-P), a United States anti-terror program established 13 years ago, immediately after the 9/11 terror attack.

Under JSOTF-P, elite American soldiers were deployed in the Philippines to track down Muslim militants with links to Al-Qaeda, including Abu Sayyaf and the Jemaah Islamiyah.

Duterte said intelligence reports tell of possible terror attacks in Kidapawan City, Koronadal City, Cagayan de Oro City, and/or Davao City.

In his command conference, Duterte told the police and the military that the threat is serious and should not be taken lightly. The mayor did not divulge though as to who are behind the terror threat.
