DAVAO CITY -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has placed areas in Eastern Mindanao under heightened alert status even before President Benigno Aquino III issued the warning on new terror threat in the country, especially in Mindanao.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte earlier ordered the security forces to keep the city safe and peaceful, after the President contacted him about the reported security threat.

Eastmincom Public Information Office head Captain Alberto Caber said government troops belonging to the Army's 10th Infantry Division and 4th Infantry Division, among other units, have been directed to closely watch suspected terrorist groups in the area.

The directive was issued by Eastmincom chief Lt. General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III. He also directed military intelligence units in Eastern Mindanao to validate reports about the plan by some terror groups.

He said members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) are also doing the same efforts.

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the PNP here are on heightened alert always even before the announcement of the President. We have intensified our security measures in all areas to ensure the security of everybody," Caber said.

Caber assured Eastmincom has enough forces to secure Davao Region, particularly Davao City and its neighboring areas. He said that Task Force Davao (TFD) and the PNP are in charge of the peace and order in the city.

He said local government units and the military have a mutual cooperation in pursuit of peace and stability of the city as mandated by the existing laws and under their campaign “Panagdait” that is under the Internal Peace Security Plan or the so-called Bayanihan.

"Threat to the thriving city and its communities are always a daily challenge that AFP and PNP in Davao are always ready to respond. Our mission is to prevent and defend our area of responsibility and its people from local and foreign terrorist groups," Caber said.

TFD chief Col. Macairog Alberto earlier appealed to Dabawenyos to abide with the tight security measures enforced by the unit here following threats reported in Cagayan de Oro City and other areas in Mindanao.

"Though there is no direct threat in Davao City, we cannot discount [the possibility] that baka yung sinasabing other areas in Mindanao ay kasama pa ang Davao City, thus we are exerting efforts to prevent incidents from happening here," Alberto said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
