DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered local authorities to "keep the city safe and peaceful" amid new terrorism threats in the country, especially in Mindanao.

The directive came after no less than President Benigno Aquino III cautioned him about this.

"The President told me to be vigilant. Sabi niya magtrabaho kayo diyan," Duterte said in an interview with reporters after the command conference with authorities held at the Grand Men Seng Hotel on Thursday evening.

"Don't take it lightly, mayor," he said, quoting Aquino.

He said the threat is not directed to Davao City, but to other parts of Mindanao, including Cagayan de Oro City, Koronadal, and Kidapawan.

During the command conference, Duterte gathered all the operatives to intensify their security in the metropolis, especially on checkpoints.

"I gave them the responsibility to keep the city peaceful and safe," he said.

Duterte also appealed to Dabawenyos, as well as local and foreign tourists to cooperate with the authorities.

"Just cooperate. It's serious," he said.

"I would like to ask everybody to just cooperate if they ask you to step down. May mga hinahanap kami na mga persons of interest and vehicles on the radar of government," he added.

In a previous command conference, Duterte said his greatest fear is terrorism.

There were at least three bombings in Davao City that claimed many lives during his previous terms.

The first was the bombing of San Pedro Cathedral on December 26, 1993. Next was the bomb blast at the waiting shed fronting the old Davao International Airport on March 4, 2003, then the Sasa Wharf bombing on April 2, 2003. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
