Deped: PTA fees not entrance requirement-A A +A
Sunday, May 25, 2014
THE Department of Education in Davao Region (Deped 11) reiterated its policy that prohibits the collection of fees during enrolment in all public schools.
“We are still implementing the no collection policy,” said Jenielito “Dodong” Atillo, Deped 11 spokesperson.
However, Atillo was quick to add that there are fees considered as “legal” or voluntary contributions such as the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fee, which shall only be collected in August for Grades 5 to 4th year high school students.
He said all these fees have been consulted among parents during its general assembly.
“But there’s no such thing as school obligation. Dili pwede nang wala kabayad ug PTA, dili ka paenrolon (Non-payment of PTA fees must not be made a basis for non-admission),” he said.
He said the no collection policy will eliminate financial constraints among parents during the opening of classes.
Based on Deped Order 41 series of 2012 (“Revised guidelines on the opening of classes”), Education secretary Bro. Armin Luistro directed all school officials that no fees shall be collected from school children in kindergarten up to Grade 4 anytime during school year 2013-2014.
The order also states that there will be no collection from June to July 2013 for Grade 5 pupils up to 4th year high school students.
Meanwhile, as per DepEd Order No. 18 s. 2014, the academic year 2014-2015 will begin next Monday, June 2 and shall end on March 27, 2015.
The school year will consist of 201 school days, inclusive of the 5-day In-Service Training break and the parent-teacher conferences.
Atillo said the DepEd maintains the June-March academic calendar for school year 2014-2015 despite the shift in school opening of some universities.
