THERMA South Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Power, said the expansion from 300 megawatts (MW) to 645 megawatts of the coal-fired plant they are constructing at the boundary of Davao City and Davao del Sur is all they have on the drawing boards as of now.

Manuel M. Orig, TSI first vice president for Mindanao affairs, said during a press conference at the inauguration of the Hedcor Tudaya 13.6 MW hydroelectric plants, that the 645 MW in addition to the other power plants that are being built by other industry players can already substantially alleviate the power shortage in Mindanao.

"As of now, there is no plan to expand the coal plant that we are building beyond the 645 MW," he said.

Orig said they usually build power plants based on the projected demand of power.

Earlier, the 17th Davao City Council approved on the second reading a resolution endorsing the expansion of the generating capacity of the TSI coal-fired power plant from 300 MW to 645 MW. The endorsement is part of the requirements that the TSI needs to prepare for their application.

The first unit of the P25-billion 300MW coal-fired power plant is expected to begin its operations by the first quarter next year. The power plant is located in Binugao, Toril, Davao City and Inawayan and Darong in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.

Once it begins its commercial operations, the plant will provide electricity to distribution utilities in the island including Davao Light and Power Corp., Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative Inc., and Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative Inc., to name a few.
