Coal plant to be back by Thursday-A A +A
Tuesday, May 6, 2014
THE second unit of the STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) coal-fired power plant has been re-scheduled to get back online in the Mindanao grid on or before Thursday, May 8, 2014.
SPI Communications head Jerome Soldevilla bared this in an e-mail to Sun.Star Davao. The company estimates that Unit 2 (105 MW) of the 210 MW SPI coal-fired power plant will return on or before Thursday while the target date for the restoration and repair of Unit 1 (105 MW) remains set on or before June 1, 2014.
SPI has originally planned get Unit 2 back online on May 4, 2014. Dr. Carsten Evers, SPI power plant manager, said in a statement that "while the repairs and restoration works of Unit 2 is substantially completed, the company needs more time to ensure that the unit is in excellent condition prior to commissioning and synchronization to the Mindanao grid."
The company added that they need to "conduct a series of comprehensive equipment tests prior to the commissioning and synchronization of the generator" to the grid.
"We apologize for this delay and rest assured that we are doing everything we can to bring the units back to the grid," Evers said.
The power generating company is closely coordinating with the Department of Energy and other stakeholders in the Mindanao power industry to help improve the power supply condition in the island.
The power plant went offline last February 27, 2014 after its turbine-electric generating sets sustained damages at the on-set of the Mindanao-wide power outage.
