SOME 5,000 workers in Davao Region are set to stage a rally today in Davao City in commemoration of the 128th International Labor Day, an official of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU)-Mindanao said.
KMU-Mindanao spokesperson Joel Maglunsod, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao, said they are expecting workers coming from the four provinces in Southern Mindanao.
The protesters will assemble in Magsaysay Park around 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. before marching towards Rizal Park in San Pedro St. The protesters are expected to pass through R. Magsaysay Ave., going to Ponciano St., Bolton St. and San Pedro St.
"First of all we want to express our call that the government should pay attention to the P125 across-the-board wage hike. We will also express our condemnation of the contractualization and the lowering of the minimum wage)," Maglunsod said in the vernacular.
But apart from the labor issues, the protesters will also be rallying on the militarization of ancestral lands and the ouster of its Indigenous Peoples (IPs) inhabitants, the penetration of mining companies and big-time plantation owners, the continuing increase in the basic commodities and the United States intervention in the political, military and economic aspect of the country.
Maglunsod also said that KMU will be staging a protest not only in Davao City but in other parts of Mindanao as well.
KMU-Mindanao will also be accompanied by protesters from different progressive groups, including the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and the Transmission Piston.
