Friday, April 25, 2014
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he wants his name out from the list of nominees to the 2014 World Mayor Award, insisting he is not used to receiving awards.
"I disagree with that. If there's somebody doing it, just stop it. As a matter of official and personal policy, I do not accept rewards," Duterte said.
"Ayaw ko yan. I do not accept awards. Ayaw ko yan. Tanggalin niyo pangalan ko. I am paid to do my work so I do not need any award. Hindi ko yan tatanggapin," he added.
Duterte was nominated to the 2014 World Mayor Award along with four other mayors from the Philippines.
The 2014 World Mayor Award is given every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his/her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.
"The winner receives the artistically acclaimed World Mayor trophy, while the runner-up is given the World Mayor Commendation," it reads.
Japanese national Dr. Kyoichiro Adachi and his wife Nelma Nacion-Adachi, who is a board of trustee and corporate secretary of the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai Inc., nominated Duterte this year.
In 2012, Mayor Inaki Azkuna of Bilbao City in Spain was awarded the World Mayor Prize, while Mayor Edgar Pamintuan of Angeles City, Philippines ranked eighth.
"This time, we want our Mayor to be the number one because he deserves it," Nacion-Adachi told Sun.Star Davao.
