BOXING champ Manny Pacquiao’s win has sent the nation in a good mood flooding messages of congratulations on social media sites. But what took the conversation by storm was not what happened on the boxing ring but by the ringside.

Manny’s mother Dionisia Pacquiao or Mommy D landed as one of the top trending topics worldwide on Twitter for over an hour soon after cameras were focused on her during the fight.

Video grabs were just as quickly shared on social media networks showing Mommy D holding what looked like a religious medallion in a small plastic packet, a rosary, and a novena card while pointing at the ring with her middle finger. GIF images were later shared as well, showing Pacquiao’s mother repeatedly kissing her novena card while standing and waving her arms, before taking a seat and doing her now-famous middle-finger point.

Voodoo, international audiences were saying in the tweets, while commentators of the fight were laughingly saying she was apparently putting a hex on Pacquiao’s opponent Timothy Bradley Jr.

In past fights, Mommy D preferred to either stay at home in General Santos and at one time chose to stay inside her hotel room. She can’t stand to see her son being pummeled live, she said.

During those fights watched through live satellite feeds on television in her General Santos home and inside the hotel room, however, Mommy D has consistently been on the high drama side – fainting, shouting prayers, and raising her rosary.

One tweet claimed that she was holding a “tarot card” in her hand. The tarot card referred to, however, looked more like a novena card.

Mommy D’s hysterical outbursts during and after Manny’s fights are already familiar to Filipino audiences who have watched her being beamed on television during and after these fights. The international audience, however, are very new to this.

She hogged the limelight anew when she walked up to Bradley at the end of the fight and hugged him as Manny looked on with a smile.
