ILLEGAL settlers, who were promised a patch of land to build their houses on after just paying P1,500 membership fee each, were stopped from further building their shanties by the police at Purok 10, Lower Madapo, Barangay 5-A, Bankerohan in Davao City, Monday morning.

Tension went high as security guards of Jocar Development Corporation tried to prevent the men who were at that time already building the wooden frames of their shanties.

There were already around 30 framings of houses already built when the police arrived around 8:15 a.m.

The trespassers were led by one Rodolfo Bariquit, who at first refused to stop the illegal settlers from building their shanties, claiming he has the papers to claim ownership for the land.

No less than San Pedro Police Station chief Joel Consulta led the policemen in stopping the takeover.

"Nagka-tension na, kaya rumesponde tayo, and we found out na ito palang mga nagpapanday dito eh nanggaling ito sa sinasabing pumapayag na mga Bariquit, but here ito ring mga Tongson (the landowner) may dala ring katibayan," Consulta said. There to stop the construction was Raul Tongson.

Those who already constructed the framing for their shanties asked that these not be demolished as they are appealing to talk with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, whom they said will be the only one who can make them leave.

The Bariquits and the landowner did not give any statement saying they will just wait for the mayor's intercession.
