POLICE regional director for Southern Mindanao Chief Superintendent Wency Pascual on Thursday ordered a probe on the death of two men from the hands of policemen in San Isidro, Davao Oriental last Sunday.

Pascual issued the order after he noticed "conflicting report" from the official police report he received from the San Isidro Police Office regarding the incident.

Reports said that brothers Jeffer and Ruben Pingkian were playing heads-or-tail game locally known as "hantak" when they had an altercation with Police Officer 2 (PO2) Werner Marcojos and PO2 Ruel Margallo.

Relatives of Pingkian brothers said the heated argument resulted to the alleged shooting of Jeffer in barangay Cuabo by Margallo. Ruben was able to escape but later gave himself up to a barangay official who in turn endorsed him to the police Sunday evening.

On Monday morning, however, Ruben was killed inside the San Isidro Police station. Police claimed that Ruben tried to grab the firearm of a policeman. Ruben was allegedly still handcuffed when killed.

The San Isidro police reportedly claimed that the brothers were involved in illegal drugs, contrary to what witnesses said that it all started with an altercation during a gambling game.

Pascual said that the report he received from the San Isidro police stated that the brothers were arrested due to illegal gambling. The arrest resulted to a shootout killing Jeffer while a policeman was also reportedly wounded in the hand.

Pascual said the police report also stated that Ruben attempted to grab the gun of one of the policemen inside the station when he was transferred from the detention cell to the investigation room, thus, he was shot dead by the cops.

Pascual admitted that he was not convinced with the report of the San Isidro PNP, thus, he ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to conduct an investigation on the incident.

Pascual also recalled PO2 Marcojos and PO2 Margallo to the holding area of the Davao Oriental Police Provincial Office in Mati City pending the result of the investigation by the CIDG.

The CIDG arrived in San Isidro yesterday for the start of their probe while relatives and supporters of the Pingkian brothers are planning to hold a condemnation rally at the police station as they demand justice for the Pingkian brothers.

On Tuesday evening, residents in the area heard two gunshots while attending the wake of the brothers. They claimed that the shots came from the direction towards the police station.
