THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) in Davao is set to conduct a probe on the alleged demanding and receiving of P2.5 million from a heavy equipment importer committed by an official of Enforcement and Security Service (ESS).

Contrary to previous report that ESS-Davao head Major Camilo Cascolan Jr. was recommended for dismissal, the Intelligence Group of BOC-Manila only advised Port of Davao district collector retired general Ernesto Aradanas to relieve Cascolan.

BOC-Davao public information officer Fatima Espino, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao, said: "There will be no dismissal since Cascolan was only recommended to be relieved from the Port of Davao. But as to the allegations that he demanded P2.5 million, we have no information yet and there is still no order. We will be investigating this to verify the information."

The alleged offense came when the Gold Tech International Machineries Trading got a shipment consisting of 15 dump trucks from China last February 28. Gold Tech, through its broker Christ Lamb Vicente, declared the shipments as 15 dump trucks supplied with Asean-China Free Trade Agreement which allows the importer to have discounted taxes.

The shipment was initially declared with P3,188,490 worth of taxes. On March 3, the shipments were examined by ESS-Davao and found no discrepancy. The BOC-Davao assessment division, however, adjusted the taxes to P4,078,781 before it was released.

Efforts to contact Cascolan remained unsuccessful even as his brother Camilo Pancratius Cascolan, head of the Compostela Valley Provincial Police Office, provided a contact number but when called, there was no answer.
