CHARGES were filed before the City Prosecutor’s Office against a sexagenarian arrested for extorting a couple at Dacoville Subdivision in Talomo, Davao City on Wednesday.

Facing robbery extortion charges is Esteban Saula Abellera, 65, a native of Kabacan and a resident of the same subdivision.

Abellera was charged with extortion for extorting money from Elias Pablo, a 59-year-old business man hailing from Dacoville Subdivision and his wife Rosemarie.

Report from the Talomo police revealed that on Tuesday, they received an extortion letter from Abellera, who claimed to be a member of the Progresibong Pundok, demanding P500,000 in exchange of their family's safety. They did not heed the letter believing it was just a prank.

But the following day, around 6 a.m., Rosemarie was awakened after she heard someone banging on their gate. When she checked, she saw another extortion letter from Abellera that read, "Pablo Family, napagkasunduan an ng kapisanan ang ultimatum ninyo ngayon araw. Huwag ninyo balewalain ito. Ibinaba na sa P300,000 ang kuta ninyo. Ang tanong, magbibigay kayo o hinde? (Pablo Family, it was agreed by the association that your ultimatum will be today. Don’t ignore this. The demand was dropped to P300,000. The question will you give or not?)"

The Pablos reported the incident to the Talomo police, which in turn advised the couple to arrange an exchange with Abellera to pave the way for an entrapment operation.

Police told the couple to leave the money at the front seat of their public utility jeepney (PUJ) where the suspect can take it.

Police made the arrest when Abellera took the P300,000 extortion money inside a black shoulder bag placed at the front seat of the PUJ of the Pablos.

The respondent is currently detained at the Talomo police station while the recovered extortion money was documented for evidence before it was returned to the couple.
