MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte urged the Davao City Water District (DWCD) to buy a generator, following the water outage caused by the loss of power last Thursday.

"We cannot be losing energy or electricity and lose water at the same time. Why don't you buy your own generator?" said Duterte.

The city experienced water interruptions brought by power disturbance last Thursday, February 27, which lasted for hours.

Duterte said the DCWD should make sure that what happened last Thursday will not happen again.

"I would rather lose electricity rather than lose water because mahirap eh, for sanitation," he said.

The City Government of Davao is willing to help the DCWD to purchase a standby generator to prevent another water outage caused by the loss of power, he said.

Imelda Magsuci, DCWD spokesperson, admitted on Thursday that the DCWD is dependent on the electricity provided by the Davao Light and Power Company.

"The source of our water is ground water which is being pumped, so for the water to be pumped electricity is needed. When we lost electricity, the pumping stopped," she said.

Duterte said he already communicated with one of the board of directors of the DCWD, who told him that it would cost them some P100 million for the generator.

He said he suggested them it would be easy and they just have to purchase it through a soft loan.

As to power outage, Duterte said the city is looking forward to the generation capacity of the coal-fired power plant in Binugao, Toril.

He said he cannot tell whether the massive power outage was caused by an explosion that happened in Lanao del Norte before dawn of Thursday.

"The military would tell me. Baka totoo nga at sinupress lang along the way. Yung mga taga Lanao, alam nila maraming gumagamit niyan. I do not think that's really the answer, but if it is that's too bad. There is no official word of it," Duterte said.

Reports said an explosion toppled NGCP tower no. 6 in Barangay Abaga, Baloi, Lanao del Norte around 3 a.m., about the same time the power interruption occurred.

The affected tower is reportedly the main distribution line from the National Power Corp. Agus hydroelectric plant in Barangay Maria Cristina.
