THE City Health Office (CHO) of Davao said an eight-month-old baby from Barangay Tamayong, Calinan District died from measles.

It is the first mortality case due to measles recorded this year.

The CHO said the child died last Tuesday, Feb. 25.

It was reported that the infant was only brought to the hospital seven days after symptoms appeared.

The CHO also recorded 230 new cases since December 2013.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) in Davao Region declared that there is a measles outbreak in Davao City as the number of patients reached 14.

CHO recorded 226 cases of measles since December 2013 to February 20 this year.

"Isang kaso lang po ng measles ay pwede na nating tawaging outbreak dahil pwede na itong makahawa ng iba pang 18 ka tao," DOH regional director Abdullah B. Dumama Jr. said over the "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" TV program last Sunday.

Dumama advised those who experience symptoms of measles to go to the nearest hospital for check-up.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted through droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of infected persons.

The CHO has conducted outbreak response immunization on areas with confirmed cases only.

Dumama, on the other hand, said the DOH is also embarking on a massive measles vaccination drive in the region in September. (Arianne Caryl N. Casas)
