THE City Government of Davao is studying the possibility of offering scholarship program for the city's indigenous peoples (IPs) who want to study law and medical courses.
Emilio Domingo Jr., technical assistant of Scholarship on Tertiary Education Program (Step)-Education Benefit System Unit, said the City Government proposes to provide P40,000 per semester to IPs who want to take up a medical course and P15,000 per semester for Bachelor of Law.
The IP-scholars should only enroll themselves in schools in Davao City that provide such courses.
The only school that offers medicine courses in the city is the Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF) while University of Mindanao and Ateneo de Davao University for law school.
Domingo said the applicant should be a Davao City citizen and must be an IP. If granted scholarship, the scholars must maintain at least 80 percent grade.
The proposal was crafted during the administration of former mayor Sara Duterte.
"Even until now, Mayor Rody (Duterte) is supportive on this program for the lumads," he said.
Domingo said the scholarship program might be introduced and be open for applicants in March this year.
