DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said his testimony before the Senate on February 6 will focus only on his efforts to end smuggling and nothing more.

"I will just consider myself as an outsider. Unless somebody there would start to talk and talk right and talk about the truth," Duterte said.

Duterte said he has already received a formal communication from the Senate secretary, requiring him to appear and give his testimony.

However, he said before the Senate summon reached him, he already learned about it upon the motion of Senator Grace Poe through the news on national TV.

He reiterated that he only exerted efforts on the campaign against rice smuggling since there was a request from Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares, who contacted him in December last year.

Thus, he said he immediately called for a conference with people connected with different government agencies to help in his campaign.

Meanwhile, lawyer Salvador Panelo said he will only accompany Duterte in the Senate should the latter ask him to.

Anyway, he said Duterte is a lawyer and "he knows what he is talking about".

Poe earlier said Duterte may also present witnesses who will attest before the panel on the real identity of Davidson Bangayan and David Tan.

Also, Bangayan will be invited to the next hearing of the Senate committee on agriculture and food to shed light on the prevalence of rice smuggling in the country.
