DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is set to meet with all the village chiefs in the city and discuss about the “alarming” number of dengue cases here and the actions needed to be done to control it.

Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte, in an interview, said the meeting is scheduled on February 20.

“Ayaw na niyang dumami pa at ayaw na niyang may mamatay pa,” Villafuerte told reporters.

“It’s so urgent so dapat i-remind ang katawhan nato na dili muundang ug limpyo (people should be reminded not to stop cleaning up their surroundings),” she added.

Based on the data presented by Villafuerte during her privilege speech Tuesday, there are already 147 cases of dengue, with one death, in Davao City from January 5 to 11 this year.

In 2013 (January to November), there were a total of 6,866 cases, with 85 deaths.

Although the number of morbidity decreased from 7,429 in 2012 to 6,866 in 2013, but the city’s mortality rate increased from 50 (2012) to 85 (2013).

Talomo South still recorded the highest cases of dengue. The barangays in Talomo South are Bago Aplaya, Bago Gallera, Dumoy, Ma-a, Talomo, Baliok, Catalunan Pequeño, Langub, Magtuod and Talomo Proper.

Records showed that the top three districts are Talomo South (1,191 cases with nine deaths), Talomo North (1,118 cases with 11 deaths) and Buhangin (846 cases with 10 deaths).

“Do not stop the 4 o’clock habit. Do not only do it if you’re expecting the City Health Office to inspect. Do not wait to have a positive dengue case. This is the only way we can prevent dengue,” Villafuerte said.

“Even one death lang in January, that’s already depressing for us in the health sector,” she added.

On the other hand, Duterte on Sunday advised the public to immediately send a suspected dengue victim to the hospital.

He assured that the City Government of Davao will extend financial assistance to those infected with dengue.

Duterte also urged the public to maintain a clean surrounding.

“It has to be a very comprehensive and united effort to clean the surrounding. Labi na gyuid kanang mga naga pondo nga tubig. Ang hangyo lang gyud sa City Helath is hygiene, manlimpyo gyud mo,” Duterte said during his program Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa.
