DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte personally handed on Wednesday P500,000 worth of check each to the four mayors of affected towns in Compostela Valley and another P2 million to the province of Davao Oriental, after flooding brought by the low pressure area (LPA) in Mindanao.
The funds were taken from the city coffers and serves as Davao City’s assistance to their neighbors.
All the four mayors, namely Compostela Mayor Lima Bolo, New Bataan Mayor Lorenzo Balbin, Montevista Mayor Eutropio Jyctin, and Monkayo Mayor Lito Brillantes, and Davao Oriental Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon all expressed their gratitude for the city’s quick assistance.
In Compostela Valley, the turnover was held at the Provincial Board session hall at the Provincial Capitol. Each municipality received P500,000 each.
Some of the members of the Provincial Board and Vice Governor Manuel "Way Kurat" Zamora were present.
Before he went to Nabunturan, Duterte also traveled to Mati, Davao Oriental to turn over the P2-million worth of check as financial assistance to the province, worst hit by the continuous rainfall.
"Pag hati-hatian niyo na lang. ‘Yan lang muna ang maibigay namin ngayon kasi we’ve been giving money left and right for the simple reason that there has been one after another devastation brought about by so many calamities," Duterte said during the turnover ceremony at the Compostela Valley Provincial Capitol.
The town mayors expressed gratitude to Duterte saying that the amount will be a big help.
Balbin, in a separate interview, said most of the P500,000 will be used for relief operations.
He said that more than a hundred residents in his town were affected by the LPA.
Zamora, on the other hand, said the LPA which lasted for four days caused more damage than Tropical Depression Agaton.
He said the total damage in New Bataan reached P106 million that includes infrastructure and agriculture.
"We're amazed! We salute the leaders of Davao City. Hindi lang dahil dito sa tulong pero yung sinasaludohan talaga namin yung liderato ni Mayor Rody," he said.
In the city of Mati, Governor Malanyaon told the mayor, “I hope you will have more blessings and more power.”
“The people of Davao City would like to share whatever little amount that we can spare. Alam naming na hirap kayo,” Duterte said. “God has blessed us with a little extra to share with our fellowmen.”
He assured Governor Malanyaon that the City Government of Davao will always be there whenever the province needs help.
Meanwhile, Mayor Duterte underscored that people must be aware with the realities of climate change and the need for adaptation measures.
“Apparently climate change has dawned upon us and we just have to come to terms with it. There will be more typhoons, more devastation because we are facing the Pacific where most typhoons are formed,” he said. (With report from Karen Lou Deloso/Davao Oriental)
