FORMER Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio apologized on Tuesday for violating the city’s speed limit.

In a TV interview aired Tuesday afternoon, Duterte-Carpio admitted violating the maximum allowable speed limit set along Quimpo Boulevard.

“I'm sorry, nagkamali ko sa pagsabot kung asa ang 40 ug 60 nga speed limit,” she said.

She said she thought the maximum speed was 60 kilometers per hour (kph).

“Layo pa lang nakita na nko sila. Pero kita ko sa akong speedometer 50 akoa. Nakiglalis pa ko sa sugod ana ko 60 man dinhi. Ana siya mam 40 man dinhi. Nahadlok pa siya sa sugod, ana siya basig mawad-an kog trabaho. Ana ko gi flag down na lang man ko nimo, ticketi na lang ko,” she said.

“Nibalibad pa gyud siya sa sugo kay mahadlok siya. Ana ko magsaad ko sa imo nga wal;ay mahitabo sa imo kung ticketan ko nimo. Ang problema makasab-an pa ka sa imong boss kung dili ko nimo ticketan,” she added.

Duterte-Carpio said right after she was caught, she reviewed the national law and the Executive Order No. 39.

“Tama gyud diay 40 ra diha,” she said.

She said she already retrieved her driver’s license at the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

She said she decided to speak up since the news about her arrest reached the national media.

Before the interview ended, Duterte-Carpio gave an advice to all the drivers in Davao City.

“Ang akong tambag sa ilaha, basahon nila ang atong balaod ug ilang i-memorize kung asa naay 30, 40 ug 60 nga speed limit,” she said.

Meanwhile, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte on Tuesday said the apprehension of his sister former Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio for overspeeding was not an "arrest me" incident.

"Kung gimmick lang eh di mas maayo kay di siya magka-problema kuha sa iyang lisensya kay gimmick lang man diba? Pero nganong niabot man gyud sa LTO iyang lisensya? (It would be better if it were just a gimmick. She won't have difficulty getting her license. But it's with the LTO already)," Duterte told the media in an interview at his office yesterday morning.

He said, "Kung gimmick na para makuha ang national attention eh wala tay mabuhat kung botohon na siya tungod ana. Kung gimmick na ha. Pero tan-aw nako dili na gimmick (If it's done just to get national attention, there's nothing we can do if the people would still vote for her. If and only if it is really a gimmick. But I don't think so)," he said.

Duterte said the violation of her sister is just a "normal" incident since "no one in this world is perfect".

"Sorry. Nag-violate siya sa balaod sa dalan. Nadakpan siya. Wala tay mabuhat ana. Normal man na. Padakop pud ko unya para daghan nami (I'm sorry. She has violated the law. She was caught. Well, it's normal. I would have myself arrested too so there'll be many of us)," he said.

But he was quick to add that: "Ok ra man na. Wala man nay problema. Tanan tao masipyat aning kalibutana. Gamayng sipyat ra man na uy. Di man nimo masulti nga dakong balaod na sa Pilipinas (There's nothing wrong with that. We all make mistakes. It's just a petty violation.)," he said.

Traffic aide Michael Villareal of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) issued a Temporary Operator's Permit (TOP) to Duterte-Carpio for violating the speed limit set along Quimpo Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. (not 1:30 a.m. as previously reported) on Monday.

According to Traffic Management Group chief Superintendent Rhodelio Poliquit, who also heads TMC, Villareal had to flag down a white Subaru SUV after logging a 57 kilometers per hour (kph) on his speed gun only to find out later that it was Duterte-Carpio.

The maximum speed allowed along Quimpo Boulevard is 40 kph, according to the Executive Order (EO) No. 39 which sets the speed limits for all vehicles within the city.

Because of what happened, Duterte said her sister is subject to pay for the penalties set by law on overspeeding.

"So tumanon niya unsay dapat buhaton didto. Kung mag seminar ba siya. Kabalo man siya ana kay abogada man siya (She has to comply. She knows it well since she's a lawyer)," the vice mayor said.

However, there is one thing that did not sit well with Duterte.

"Ang akoa lang kay nganong gi big deal sa TMC. Nganong ilang gipadako sa storya. Normal man madakpan ang pribado nga tao naman na siya. Ngano ila pang padakuon? Nganong painterview pa siya para musikat siya through my sister? (I just wonder why they would have to make it a big deal. Does he want to be famous for arresting my sister?)," Duterte said pertaining to Villareal.

Meanwhile, Duterte said he immediately texted her sister upon learning the news.

He said Duterte-Carpio got irked after he made fun of her photo in her driver's license.

"Akoy nitext sa iya, ana ko wala ko ganahi sa iyang picture didto sa iyang lisensya. Dapat mo file ug complaint didto sa LTO para kambyohan ilang camera. Didto nag sugod iyang init sa iyang ulo," Duterte said, laughing.
