A WOMAN was injured while some P1.5 million worth of property were damaged following an explosion at a factory in Malagamot, Panacan, Davao City, on Friday.

The injured victim was identified as Mary Jane Menguillo, a crew at the refining and receiving building of the Nakashin Davao International Inc.

Menguillo was hit by debris and shattered materials. She was brought to the Davao Medical School Foundation for treatment.

The joint investigation conducted by Senior Police Officer 1 Dennis Conaco of the Technical Support Platoon of the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) and Captain Mahammad K. Abdula of the 7th Explosive and Ordnance Team revealed that the cause of the explosion was the chemical reaction of the calcium carbide when it was mixed with water. Calcium carbide is used to hasten the ripening of mangoes.

It was learned that the plant’s maintenance in-charge Dante Aladin and other factory workers were experimenting on how long it will take eight kilos of mango to ripen using two kilos of calcium carbide.

The explosion also damaged two heater control panels, assorted plastic crates, lighting fixtures, three roofing panels, one sheet electrical panel, assorted insulated panels and one unit weighing scale.

The damage caused by the explosion was estimated at P1.5 million by production manager Dick Alves.
