KIDAPAWAN CITY -- Unidentified gunman shot dead in broad daylight the vice mayor of the municipality of Kabacan in North Cotabato around 2:45 p.m., Friday.
Inspector Tirso Pascual of Kabacan Police identified the fatality as Kabacan Vice Mayor Pol Dulay, who is seeking re-election in May 2013 mid-term elections.
Reports said Dulay was just leaving the crowded MC Square after buying some grocery items along USM Avenue in Poblacion, Kabacan when an unidentified gunman shot him several times.
After seeing his target dead, the assassin tucked his pistol in his waist and walked casually to a motorcycle parked nearby.
Police have yet to find out if the killing is politically-motivated.
Dulay is running mate of Kabacan Mayor George Tan under the Liberal Party.
Dulay is pitted against Datumaido Sultan, an independent candidate.
Dulay was the second vice mayor of Kabacan to have been killed in town since late '90s.
In the '90s, former Kabacan vice mayor Mamaluba was killed when a bomb, wrapped in a gift, exploded in front of him.
