Kitty, Kitty

Okay. By now you may have heard or read that Hello Kitty is not a cat, not even a kitty. So what in the world is she? According to the creators of Hello Kitty, she is actually a girl. Yup, a girl. She is described as a happy and cheerful girl with a heart of gold. She sounds like a song by Neil Young if you ask me. She is a cartoon character who never walked in fours because she is a girl nga eh!

Furthermore, it was revealed that her full name is Kitty White. She was born on November 1 1974 in southern England. Kitty White? That name reminds of something not wholesome. November 1? That is All Saints’ Day. 1974? That would make her 30 years old this year. Matanda na pala si Kitty. Her height is “five apples.” And her weight is “three apples.” Do not ask me what those things mean. If you ask me my weight is 5 durian then I can probably answer you.

Being born on November 1, that makes her a Scorpio. And being a Scorpio she has certain traits. Her strengths include her being loyal, passionate and resourceful. On the downside, Scorpio people are jealous, obsessive and suspicious. Kitty has no mouth because according to Sanrio Kitty “speaks from the heart.” O char yan ha! From the heart daw, kaya sincere!

She has a twin sister named Minny White who lives in a suburb in London. Yes dearies, Kitty has a twin sister Minny. Now I do not know if she was named after Minnie Mouse which begs the question is Minnie a mouse? And from there we could even ask, is Mickey a mouse too? Well? Disney better answer that. And while we are at it, is Donald Duck also a person wearing a duck costume? And what about Goofy? And Pluto? Okay, okay I was carried away. Back to Kitty and her sister Minny. Their parents are George and Mary. Nice innocent and even common names for ordinary people whose daughter was whisked into fame. And get this Kitty actually has a pet. HUWAT? Yes dear pussy cats, she has a pet. And of all things the pet is a cat named Charmmy Kitty. Why the double M, I have no idea. This is the first time that I am actually getting to know Kitty White because when frankly I did not give a hoot about Kitty. I was interested more with Gigantor and Bugs Bunny. (So is Bugs really a rabbit?)

Kitty fans all over the world have reacted to this revelation that Kitty is not a pussy cat. That is impossible one says because she has whiskers! Well if you wear a costume and put whiskers then you can probably get away with it. Some Kitty fans are adamant and mad and I guess you really cannot blame them. After all, they grew up with this image and the reality that their beloved Kitty is actually a kitten. Their dream was shattered and their fantasies dashed. It is like discovering that Santa is not real. And that Santa is actually your mother or your father. There is a disappointment of sorts.

All of us have childhood heroes or heroines. We have cartoon characters we identify with. Well, we identify ourselves according to our childhood years. So some can identify with GI Joe or “The Transformers”. Others know Voltes Five. (Let’s volt in!) Then there are the Thundercats. If we go earlier we discover, Jonny Quest, Scooby Doo, Archie, Jughead, Yogi Bear. I just gave away my age. Actually while we are there, I loved Wally Gator and Touche Turtle. We all have our cartoon favorites. And when they are stripped of what we thought them to be, we feel disappointed, even betrayed. But that is reality and accept it Kitty fans. Kitty is not a cat.

Next thing you know is she might just do that overexposed ice bucket challenge.
