AND… contrary to what you might think, healthy food is yummy.
Generose has been inviting me over since her Kuya Milo started whipping up food. Although the desire to visit the garden has been sparked way before, with Nina C. Nothing came out of both. First, because you can hardly catch Nina C., second, I rarely can make it for lunch. It’s always after work for me if I intend to enjoy food. Lunch is always a hurried break or working lunch.
That all changed when after having been made to walk for over an hour underneath the cloudless sky (and no there was no banner to flutter high, hurhurhur, traces of Ateneo remain) for a story I’m working on, Generose surprised me with a huge salmon burger complete with salad and soup, and a menu.
She sure knows how to drag me out, and dragged me out she did with a bunch of my friends to boot. Miggy, Maan, Ricky, and Kublai, plus me, agreed to meet up at the open parking lot of Abreeza outside the Marks and Spencer area to go to Wynward Organic Vegetable Garden where Generose’ Kuya Milo aka Rodelio Carmelo F. Dalisay tends to an organic garden and whips out healthy stuff that are yummy to boot. By the way, I’ve often encountered friends desperately looking for kale in Davao. Here is where you can get fresh kale and collard greens, too.
Sad to say, there was no salmon burger left that Friday night. (I have this feeling that the photo I posted on Facebook had something to do with this… but that is just a feeling).
Normally, Wynward doesn’t serve dinner. It prepares food to go and for dine-in lunch, and he only has a tiny space that has two tables. (There’s a garden area, he said, but it was too dark that night). But, it was the only way to drag me there, set it for after work…
Miggy, Kublai, and Maan got the garlic encrusted malasuge on rice. Ricky and I got the Waldorf chicken salad pita. We all got a huge plateful that came with a thick, yummy squash soup.
There’s a lot more, but there were a lot of stuff that have ran out that night. We didn’t find reason to complain since the Waldorf was really yummy, and so was the malasuge.
Normally, he’d have lean veggie meatloaf sandwich, tuna melt in whole wheat bread cup, mini margherita pizzas, lite nachos supreme, parmesan chicken or dory wrap, whole wheat pizza bread, chicken cacciatore and pasta, peking cinnamon chicken wrap, balsamic chicken or tuna flakes in peso pasta, lean beef cabbage roll, bangus relleno wrapped in tortilla, pork or chicken adobo sandwich, daing na bangus sandwich, etc. etc.. These are all served with salad and soup.
His light basil vinaigrette dressing was delicious and makes for a really refreshing salad. The waldorf chicken on pita was creamy. Everything was excellent (including his cousin Pia’s silvana treat), but more excellent were the stories told in between bites.
Kuya Milo it turned out has retired in Davao after 20 years in the US teaching as a doctor in plant pathology during the day and a chef at night. How he got to be both stems from the Philippine government’s penchant to forget its people once it sends them off in some foreign places. Kuya Milo was on a scholarship grant of sorts for his doctorate or something, but was not sent an allowance for almost five months upon arriving there, and so he found part-time employment as a dish washer and worked his way up to become a chef.
We’re planning on returning, this time with bottles of wine…
Read carefully and don’t lose your way as many have done, over and over again. Wynward Organic Garden is right outside Abreeza, Obrero exit.
Meaning, the moment you or your vehicle gets out of the Abreeza property, turn right. Yes, turn right, right away. Milo sayd the best marker, since their green gate is often overlooked, is a blue sign that says, “Caution deep canal”. Once you see that sign, turn right. The first property to the left is Wynward.
