OH, THAT creamy dairy product made from fermented milk! Most people enjoy yogurt, plain or with flavor, whether for a snack or an addition to smoothies, and even for dishes (Greek yogurt chicken, for instance!).

Most of the groceries have a slew of flavored yogurt choices, from all-time favorite strawberry and blueberry, melon, to pandan.

Known to many, yogurt has countless of good bacteria called "lactobacillus" that keeps our stomach in good shape. Yogurt gives good bacteria that are already in our gut a reinforcement when bad bacteria are on the rise.

"Yogurt is used for restoring normal bacteria in the intestine after antibiotic therapy and for treating antibiotic-associated diarrhea in children," www.webmd.com cited.

The website added that the other uses of yogurt are for treating bacterial infection that can cause stomach ulcers; and decrease cholesterol levels. Yogurt is also known alternative to milk for those who suffer from lactose intolerance.

Beauty regimen

But, the list of yogurt benefits doesn't end there. It boasts of some beauty benefits, too.

If you care to know read on.

Wikihow states anyone can make a weekly face pack with yogurt. The formula: add yogurt with honey, grated carrots, lime juice, and banana for better results. Or, you may have plain yogurt as a face pack alone. It smoothens out your skin, leaving it noticeably moisturized.

For acne treatment, it added the fermented milk can keep pimple breakout at bay. This needs no explanation since the good bacteria in yogurt battle out bad bacteria, the cause of pimple breakouts.

As a hair treatment, just mix yogurt with oil. Put a dollop of the mixture on the hair, then leave for few minutes before rinse.

One might think that keeping a jar of yogurt at home is pricey. True enough that yogurt, when bought at the grocery, is expensive, costing more than P100 for a jar. But why buy one, when making homemade yogurt is just a breeze, which is actually more economical because you only spend a fraction of the price for one litter for the raw ingredients: milk and starter yogurt.

Find out how in next week's issue.
