DEAR Dr. Fritz,

‘Good day to you, doc. I am Lavinia. I am writing you because of my problem with my gray hair. I just turned 25 this year and yet, my hair had turned gray. I don’t like this. I look like I’m older than my age. What could be the cause? What should I do?

Please help me. Thanks and God bless.

Lavinia TM

Dear Lavinia TM,

I understand what you feel. It doesn’t feel right when you look older than your age. Age may just be a number – but, when you look older than your actual age, it changes the number game and the look perspective.

Typically, we, Asians we start going gray at our mid-30s. But, you just turned 25 and your hair had turned gray. This is about a decade earlier than you’re supposed to set those hair locks in the silvery skies. I believe what you have is premature graying of your hair.

What could be the reason? Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that you are already sick of some sort although in rare cases, this might be linked to some medical causes.

As a matter of fact, scientists don’t really know why some people go gray early. But, genes may play a big role here. So, if you see your relatives go gray early, chances are you can blame that to your genes.

There is a popular belief that stress may cause this. But, this is not just quite true.

So, what are the major role players?
1. Vitamin B-12 deficiency
2. Pituitary or thyroid gland problems

However, both of these are reversible when these problems are corrected.
I hope you see your physician so that you will be properly assessed and you will have peace of mind.

What should you do with your hair gray? Of course, you have to hide them either by applying hair colors permanent or semi-permanent, highlights or whatever suits your heart. You have to visit your favorite salon to see what looks good for you. You might have to add a chic haircut to fit your age.

Your hair color might make you look old but, it’s the attitude that counts. If you are young, active and healthy, then, gray is just another color choice. Remember, it is your ability to take joy in your life that what makes you a truly beautiful woman.

Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
