DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Good day to you! I am Amita. I am one of your followers. I am writing you because of my brittle nails. I hate it because they don’t look good. I can see them cracking with my nail polish on. I have tried looking in the market some nail hardeners. But, they’re just painfully expensive. I can’t afford them. I tried asking for some natural nail hardeners. But, I don’t get some honest answers. So, I come to you and hope to get what I need.

Thank you for your help and I’ll wait for your response!

Amita H.

Dear Amita H.,

I know how it feels when you see your nails cracking. I think you are also using nail polish regularly to make your nails look good. The problem is, when you use nail polish and nail remover regularly, this can have a negative effect in your nails making them brittle and your cuticles damaged. I believe this is what is happening in your case.

I know how expensive nail hardeners are. I see them in the market and sad to say, it’s not as affordable as we want it to be. I also didn’t see any made in China version…hehe..

But, don’t you worry. There is a solution I can help you with in your situation. This is a natural remedy which you are looking for.

You can use sunflower oil. This is rich in vitamin E and has comforting properties. Vitamin E has been proven to be a protective and strengthening factor. In this premise, you can use sunflower oil then, as your natural nail strengthener. However, if you can’t find sunflower oil, you can opt for vitamin E oil capsules which you can prick to get what you need. This is not the vitamin E supplement, but, the version is that of the vitamin E capsule that is for topical use.

Here’s how to do it. Get an empty bowl and pour in some sunflower oil or prick some vitamin E oil capsule, which would just be enough to cover your nails and cuticles. You can add water if you want. Now, place your hands in the bowl and allow your nails and cuticles to soak up the oil for about 15 minutes. You can also dip in a lot longer, if you wish. Don’t expect an overnight sensation. You have to do this every day for about a week and then, every 2 to 3 days thereafter, for the next 2 weeks or so. After this, you can do this beauty regimen once a week regularly.

Moreover, I hope you refrain from using nail polish and nail polish remover regularly. You can, however, do it once a month if you really want your nails colored. Try also shying away from harsh ingredients like soaps – for they can really hurt your nails.

Nourish yourself too with calcium as they can help your nails and your teeth get strong.

Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
