The road to Chiyo

WEST JBT Plaza building just across Waterfront Insular Hotel seemed a far place to go particularly if you are from Matina in the southern suburbs of the City.

But I was up for an invitation from Belinda Tan and Karla Singson for some ramen and yakiniku at Chiyo’s one of the restaurants in West JBT Plaza (these include Jaime’s and West Empire).

With media and blogger friends, we tried out Chiyo’s ramen choices. According to Belinda, the noodles are made fresh with only the best ingredients. My favorite was the Shoyu Ramen, which is flavored by soy sauce.


According to Belinda, whose husband’s family owns the building and the restaurants in it, the place is frequented by Japanese golfers who appreciate the authentic Japanese flavor particularly of the ramens in the place.

After the ramen tasting, Belinda and marketing specialist Karla Singson treated the media with Chiyo’s vaunted Yakiniku selection. They are the only Yakiniku house in Davao which uses ventilated (smokeless) grillers.

The choice of Yakiniku is a mouthwatering array of choice Wagyu Beef cuts, pork-tenderloin and pork belly slices, US Beef Tongue and Beef Liver slices, fresh shrimps, mackerel, tuna, salmon and seafood plus a variety of vegetables which are locally grown.

And the menu fare isn’t that expensive, particularly for those who are conscious of gasoline expenses, or particularly those from south or downtown Davao. The prices itself will offset fuel expenses in going there.

Aside from Chiyo, you can also try-out the sumptuous buffet at Jayme’s or the Chinese cuisine at West Empire. Truly, West JBT Plaza has become a gastronomic destination in this part of Davao.

But if you come looking for tasty and authentic Japanese cuisine and yakiniku, there’s Chiyo worth trying out for.

The restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. of Sundays.
