BUTUAN CITY -- As part of its disaster-response efforts, the Habitat for Humanity Davao and Caraga Regional Team headed to this city last February 5 to distribute relief packs to families affected by floods brought about by Tropical Depression Agaton.

Dolly Santos-Serranillo, Resource Development manager of Habitat, spearheaded the distribution of relief packs consisting of donations of clothes, rice, canned goods, biscuits, bottled water, and hygiene kits to 245 families living in Barangay Baan Riverside.

Habitat for Humanity also turned over 19 gallons of drinking water, 1,880 pieces of medicine, and two boxes of toys to the children of Barangay Baan Riverside Day Care Center.

Last January 20, heavy rains caused by Tropical Depression Agaton caused the Agusan River to swell, submerging nearby low-lying communities in ceiling-high floodwaters and leaving two-feet deep mud in its wake.

Jeremiah P. Cafe, Baan Riverside Barangay chairman, expressed gratitude for the relief assistance. He said that weeks after the flood, most houses in Baan Riverside, identified as the barangay worst affected by the flood, are still in need of cleaning and repair.

The activity was conducted in coordination with the City Social Welfare and Development and Butuan Habitat for Humanity Incorporated, led by its president, Nora Rama.
