Shoe affliction

ADMIT it, you love shoes, too. It's not just Imelda Marcos who loves shoes, actually. She just loved shoes so much, it makes our love pale in comparison.

Thus, attending the opening of Sperry Topsider at SM Lanang was a visual treat. Most especially because Sperry is all about boat shoes - meaning, comfort and adventure.

It becomes more fun as you get into the history of this shoe brand that was very popular among "my generation" of high school and college kids. Yes, children, we were wearing Sperry long before you even knew it existed.

In fact, people were wearing Sperry even before my generation knew it existed, like 1935.

And it all started with a dog.

As the story goes: "One wintry day in New England in 1935, Paul Sperry watched his cocker spaniel, Prince, run across a frozen pond by his Connecticut home. Noticing Prince's amazing ability to maintain traction on the slippery surface, Sperry examined the dog's paw and observed hundreds of tiny cracks and cuts going in all directions. These wave-like grooves became the inspiration of Mr. Sperry's patent called Razor-Siping, which was instrumental in the development of the now 'Authentic Original,' which Sperry introduced in 1935.

It came out serving its niche market until 1939 when the US Navy adopted Spetty Top-sider as a standard issue for its sailors, the press release on Top-siders read.

It's fascinating how a mere pair of shoes can have a history. But hey, maybe that's why we unconsciously love shoes.

Needless to say, I now have a pair. Just one, so far...

Sperry Top-Sider is at the ground level of SM Lanang.
