WITH the help of a stage, a microphone and a spotlight, some local kids showed how they shine during the second preliminary competition of the annual search for SM Little Stars held at the SM Main Mall last July 27.
It was indeed another great weekend for me, to see kids jumping, running to and fro and innocent laughs roaring at the backstage while parents were getting anxious at every second, to wait at their kids turn to show up onstage.

Twelve kids, six boys and girls from the cities of Davao and General Santos competed for the title to join the regional finals at SM City Gensan.

The contestants included Princess Alaine Mae T. Ugarte, Lady Jewel Agduma, Gianna Cymone Sombilon, Sophia Stephanie Gayle N. Fenocious, Wilmic Rose Aban, Eunice Mary T. Manampan, Marco Antonio J. Unabia, Eberhard II Lamigo, Randler Xagne Basalo, Yuri M. Alipoyo, Kurt Yhury Mentero and Patrick Jan Jakob.

Power Cast Dancers opened the show with “Despicable Me” sound track, “Happy”, as kids joined in having so much fun with a little bit of giggles throughout the dance number.

The 12 SM Little Star finalists then strutted the stage and introduced themselves, to the delight of the audience, as kids showed self-confidence and talent with ease. Joining me onstage to walk us through the details and mechanics of the whole talent show, were past winners which included Little Andre Canete (2007), Trishia Lorraine Dioso (2009), Josh Benario (2009), Anya Maxine Cruz (2010), Antonio Paulino Obed (2010), Lawrence Christian Aguba (2011) and Sofia Raphael Kintanar (2013).

SM Little Stars is a contest for boys and girls ages four to six years old, smart, photogenic, telegenic, cute and charming.

The SM Little Stars audition opened last July 6 with more than 40 kids selected as qualifiers. Over 2.5 million worth of prizes is at stake, which include a Trip to Xiamen, China plus a college scholarship to be won in the Grand Finals which will be held in Manila.

Members of the board of judges were Piano and Voice Teacher April G. Labagala, Lead vocalist of 7th Heaven and Alconera Project Bands and restaurant owner Rochelle Venuti, and Voice instructor of Yamaha School of Music, Ronie Luma.

The big winners in the 2nd Preliminary contest was the bubbly Sophia Stephanie Gayle Fenocios and the crowd favorite, Patrick Jan Jakob who’s one –liner made us love him more, “The road to success is always under construction”.
