THIS mestiza lady from Tacloban City is starting to build her name in the music industry.

A Yolanda survivor of Filipino-Chinese-Spanish descent, Shirley Vy is one of the freshest faces in the industry.

It was mid-last year when Shirley started her singing career.

"I officially started mid-last year. I was just 21 years of age. Before I entered the music industry, I was busy managing and helping our family business. But deep inside my heart, I knew I always wanted to become a singer and performed on stage," said Shirley, who was discovered during an event at her school.

Determined to achieve her goal, which is to become a singer, Shirley said she sacrificed a lot and exerted a lot of efforts just to achieve her dream.

For now, Shirley's first single can already be heard on different radio stations all over the country.

Her single Sabihin Mo' under Universal Records is written by Arnie Mendaros.

"It was released last May. It talks about a special feeling of being in love, having the fear of losing the person you love, wanting to know if both of you feel the same way, and the most special feeling you get when that person tells you the three magical words, I love you. To make it sounds not so mushy, it has been translated as la-la-la-la-la, "she said.

Shirley added that she really feel in-love with singing where she can express well her emotions.

"It’s when I can’t express myself, music will. When I sing, I study every line of the song and reflect on it. It allows me to connect and express my feelings," she said.

Shirley shared that she can’t escape with the overwhelming competition in the industry, but it didn’t feel her down nor made her weak, instead it push her to do more and show more on her most love talent, which is singing.

"The competition is really tough, as we all know there are so many people who also aspire to be in the industry. My family especially my father didn’t want my chosen career so I saved up and worked hard to sustain my stay and my needs in Manila. I became independent. Learned to live on my own and stand with my own feet," she said.

This Ilongga singer loves to listen to her idols, like Gary Valenciano, Sarah Geronimo, Katy Perry, Ingrid Michaelson, and Usher.

"All of them have two things in common: first, they are really good singers and secondly, they keep their feet on the ground."

With the positive feedback she’s getting from her fans, this newbie singer is much inspired to show more of her craft and be a good example and inspiration to the youth, who also aims to be a singer like her.

"For those who are aspiring to become singers, never stop believing in your dreams and do something about it. You must be patient, persistent, sing from the heart with enthusiasm, and learn how to handle criticism. Only listen to constructive criticism if it can actually help you improve your talent; otherwise, ignore it. Enhance your talent. Keep on practicing. Anyone can be a singer but it takes a passionate heart and a will to become a good one," the message of this Piscean singer.
