TODAY in Isyu Mindanao, John Paul Seniel explores the majestic beauty of Siargao, a teardrop-shaped island in Surigao del Norte, popularly known as the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines."

One of the best known surfing reef waves in Siargao with a worldwide reputation for its thick and hollow tubes is "Cloud 9."

Discovered by travelling surfers in the late 1980s, Cloud 9 is the site of the annual Siargao Cup, a domestic and international surfing competition sponsored by the provincial government of Surigao del Norte.

Known for being a relatively cheap destination for surfers, Cloud 9 was named after a chocolate bar and was made famous by John S. Callahan, an American photographer who published the first major feature on Siargao Island in the US-based "surfer" magazine in March 1993.

Catch the beauty of the waves on Siargao Island in Isyu Mindanao today, 7:25 a.m. on GMA Network's regional stations in Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and General Santos.
