THE National Food Authority (NFA) in Davao City is expecting prices of rice to slowly go up as rice production enters the lean months starting April.

NFA-Davao City provincial director Virgilio B. Alerta, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao on Friday, said rice could go up by 50 centavos monthly from April to around the first week of August.

He said the harvest from the neighboring rice producing provinces usually drop during this period.

To ensure that the rice prices do not shoot up during the lean months, the NFA will increase the supply of rice at their 180 outlets in Davao City.

Alerta said the NFA has 430,000 sacks of rice in their warehouses in the city and he expects 300,000 sacks more by April.

As of Friday last week, Alerta said the prices of commercial rice were stable.

Rice in the region is usually grown in Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley, and Davao Oriental. The region also sources its rice from North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Maguindanao.
