THE opening of more direct flights from Davao City to key cities in the country is seen to drive competition as it is seen to provide travelers more flight choices at affordable rates.

Both AirAsia Philippines and Philippine Airlines (PAL) are set to launch new routes utilizing the F. Bsngoy International Airport in Davao City.

AirAsia Philippines will start its thrice daily Manila-Davao-Manila by March 27 while flag-carrier PAL will be starting its daily Cebu-Davao-Cebu and thrice a week Zamboanga-Davao-Zamboanga.

"All these flights that are opening fosters healthy competition," Lisette Marques, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO), told Sun.Star Davao in an interview on Friday.

She said competition gives consumers more choices, making airfare rates more competitive.

Marques also said the new connection to Cebu, which is an international hub, will give foreign tourists more access to Davao City.

"Because Cebu is an international hub perhaps it can also drive international tourists to come here to the city," she said.
