THE Tagum City Agriculture Office (CAO) is in the process of establishing a multi-species hatchery that will cater the city's seafood industry.

CAO project and program coordinator Dennis Obero, who guested in Monday's edition of KapehansaDabaw at SM City Davao, said the hatchery will rise in a 2,000 square meters (sq.m.) property in Barangay Libuganon.

Obero said the project cost is around P1 million, with funding from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Some of the main features of the hatchery are the laboratories and tubs. The hatchery can generate at least 20 jobs.

He said the hatchery will first focus on the production of King Crabsm after which they will embark on the production of other marine species.

Obero said they are now looking into the production of tilapia and giant oysters, too.

He said crab production will initially cater to the local market, but they are also eyeing to export to other foreign markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan.

In fact, Obero said, a Taiwanese trader is interested in buying crabs from them.

He said they are targeting to complete the hatchery by the end of the year in time for the Arawng Tagum celebration. The CAO will be the one to operate the hatchery.

Aside from the hatchery project, the Tagum CAO is also proposing for the establishment of a cacao processing plant that will cater to cacao producers in the city.

He said the processing plant will rise probably near the city's E-Park or Botanical Park.

Obero said the project will be an inter-agency initiative as CAO alone will not be able to fund the project.

The proposal for the processing plant is targeted to be finished within the year.
