LOCAL food industry-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) who will be joining the delegation from Davao City to the Salon Internationaled 'Alimentation (Sial) in Paris in October 2014 will be expected to gain new insights and innovative ideas as to how they can better market their products globally.

Export Acadamey, with the support of the Davao City Government through the office of Councilor Marissa Salvador Abella and the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), is organizing an explorative trade mission to Sial 2014 which will be staged in Paris, France. The trade mission is planned from October 17 to 28, 2014.

Raf Vlummens, Small Business Development Center committee chair, speaking in Wednesday's Club 888 Forum at Marco Polo Hotel Davao, said the participating local food industry players will be able to study the European and global food market and trends that will unlock more export opportunities.

"Our products here are world class but they (the MSMEs) should be able to know how the products are presented to not only the European market but also to the global market," he said.

For example, fish here are sold as fish with skin but the western and European market prefer filleted fish. Another is, when exporting fruits, local producers should consider exporting them as fruit in cans.

DCCCII executive vice president Arch. Daniel T. Lim said this will be the first time they will be bringing Davao City delegates to Sial.

He said the knowledge that the delegates will get will be very useful in the marketing of their products locally and internationally, particularly for the Asean market.

Liezel Salera, consultant on social enterprise and market for agriculture of the Office of Councilor Abella, said that going to the international trade expo will help the small players find out if their products are of the right fit for the foreign market.

Aside from Sial, participants will have the opportunity to visit Brussels, Belgium to meet with the import specialists of Voka, the Belgian Chamber of Commerce.

The explorative trade mission was announced earlier by DCCCII president Antonio T. dela Cruz during the chamber's general membership meeting on Friday at the Seda Abreeza Hotel.

Sial 2014 is considered to be the world's largest international food and beverage exhibition featuring retail distribution, food service, and international trading businesses.
