CONSUMERS in Davao Region are told not to worry about the supply of chicken as it is sufficient enough to cater to the market demand, agriculture officials said.

Department of Agriculture (DA)-Davao livestock program coordinator Mae Ann Constantino, in a press conference at the sidelines of the Goat and Sheep Techno Forum and Agri-trade Fair last week, assured Dabawenyos there is no problem when it comes to the production of chicken in the region.

"When it comes to the status of chicken, Davao Region is one of the self-sufficient regions when it comes to chicken," said Jose C. Reaño, DA undersecretary for operations (livestock).

He also pointed out that the region is also one of the top producers in the country when it comes to the production of poultry.

Reaño said due to the high production of the region, they are now contemplating on the possibility of transporting chicken from Davao Region to Metro Manila in order to cater to the needs of those in the capital.

Metro Manila is currently experiencing a spike in the price of chicken brought by the lack of supply in the market. The capital usually gets their supply from Southern Tagalog, which was affected by the recent Typhoon Glenda.

Reaño said the typhoon damaged chicken houses and caused high mortality among chicken.

The DA said consumers affected by the price increase of chicken can expect the prices to stabilize sometime September or October.
