Steag 210MW plant fully operational

THE Steag State Power Inc. (SPI) announced its 210 megawatt (MW) Coal-Fired Power Plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental has bveen fully operational since May 30, 2014, improving the Mindanao grid's power supply.

In an e-mail sent by SPI communications head Jerome Soldevilla on Friday, SPI's 105 MW Unit 1 has already been synchronized to the Mindanao grid at around 3:28 p.m. on Friday, ahead of its scheduled target last June 1.

"We are pleased to announce that Unit 1 has resumed operations and we hope that this added capacity will help improve the critical power supply condition of Mindanao," Dr. Carsten Evers, SPI Power Plant manager, said in the e-mailed statement.


SPI was also able to synchronize its Unit 2 last May 7.

SPI's two identical electrical generating sets, with a net capacity of 105MW each, underwent repairs and maintenance startibg last February 27 after sustaining damages brought by the Mindanao-wide power outage that happened on the smae date.

SPI is one of the major power producers in Mindanao, delivering more than 10 billion kWh of power to the grid since the start of its operations in November 2006.

SPI is principally owned by the German company Steag GmbH, with Aboitiz Power Corp. and La Filipina Uygongco Corporation as shareholders.
