SOME 10 Davao-based small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have already expressed interest to utilize the Food Processing Innovation Center (FPIC), a P5.3-million facility set to open in August at the Philippine Women's College (PWC).

Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Davao City Science and Technology center coordinator Judy Donna D. Nueva Ecija said these SMEs have already expressed their interest in using the center for the development of their products.

"The types of SMEs varies but mostly are into processing tropical fruits," she said.

For instance, she said there is one SME engaged in coco sugar production that is interested in using the spray dryer. There is also another SME engaged in the production of fruit chips that is eyeing to use the vacuum dryer for the production of durian chips.

Nueva Ecija pointed out that operations of the FPIC has not yet begun but they are targeting to begin the operations this August once the training of their personnel is completed and they have finalized the rules and regulations of the center.

She said the center is currently open for interested SMEs, academe, and businessmen who want to check the center out.

The facility will house the seven food processing equipments: water retort, immersion freezer, vacuum packaging machine, spray dryer, vacuum evaporator, vacuum fryer, and vacuum dryer.

The FPIC is a collaborative project of the DOST, Philippine Women's College of Davao, Department of Trade and Industry-Davao, and Food Processors Association of Davao Inc.
